As an 18-year-old market worker, I was used to the hustle and bustle of the marketplace. The lively sights and sounds, including the occasional street animals, were a familiar part of my daily routine. But one particular dog caught my attention – a Shiba Inu named Ollie. Unlike the other scruffy and feral animals, Ollie was well-groomed, polite, and strangely determined. Every day, I would see him sitting outside a closed bike shop, staring longingly at the glass panes.
My coworkers later told me that Ollie’s owner, the bike shop owner, had disappeared weeks ago. My heart sank at the thought of someone abandoning such a loyal dog. I couldn’t understand how someone could do such a thing. Fueled by compassion, I began bringing a part of my lunch for Ollie. To my surprise, each day he would eagerly accept the food but dart off without eating a single bite.
Initially, I thought Ollie might have puppies hidden somewhere. But I soon realized that he was a male dog, making his behavior even more puzzling. As days passed, I noticed Ollie getting weaker – his glossy coat dulling, his energy fading. I couldn’t ignore the growing mystery.
One day, I decided to follow Ollie. As usual, he grabbed the sandwich and bolted. This time, I chased after him, determined to uncover the truth. For over two hours, Ollie trotted through winding streets, leading me far beyond the marketplace to a quiet, run-down neighborhood. Finally, he slowed down and stopped outside an abandoned house surrounded by outbuildings.
I watched in amazement as Ollie squeezed through a hole under the chain-link fence and began pawing at the front door. Curiosity got the better of me, and I climbed over the fence to follow him. To my shock, Ollie placed the sandwich into a small hole he had dug under the door. Moments later, I heard faint barking coming from inside. Peering through a window, I was stunned to see a large German Shepherd devouring the sandwich.
It suddenly dawned on me – Ollie had been bringing food to his trapped companion all along. My heart ached as I saw the German Shepherd, weak and desperate. I knocked on the door, shouting for anyone who might be inside, but the house was eerily silent. Determined to help, I called the police.
